If you’re still searching for that shiny Melbourne summer feeling, we’ve got your go-to checklist in hand for some guaranteed good vibes. We’ve cast the net wide to catch something everyone will love, so let us know if we’ve missed any of your favourite summer moments!
Shop at a night market
Say goodbye to hump day with a trip to the city’s Wednesday night markets. Shop for handcrafted goodies at Blender Lane Artists Market or tuck into some fancy street food at the Summer Night Market until March.
Hang out in Fed Square
There’s always something free and fun going down at Federation Square. Find your summer rhythm in an African drumming workshop or bring some inner balance back with Tuesday morning Tai Chi. Love free music? Then get along to Fed Square Live on Thursdays from 5.30pm.
Picnic in the gardens
Get a taste of the great outdoors and enjoy summer to the full. Duck off the busy streets with a friend, and take some downtime in one of the city’s beautiful parks and gardens.
The best seat in the house for a Melbourne sunset has to be a rooftop bar with a cocktail (or mocktail) in hand. You can’t go past Loop Roof or Campari House for fab views and specialty drinks. Madame Brussels even offers a deliciously kitsch rooftop experience with jugs of Pimms and chocolate fondue.
Watch the Australian Open
Nothing says Melbourne summer quite like the sound of tennis balls thwacking off the court during the Australian Open. If you can’t make it to Melbourne Park to see Federer and the gang, you can watch the action from the free Australian Open Live Site at Fed Square.
Watch an outdoor movie
Go to an art exhibition
Start the year by checking out some of the great free exhibitions on around the city. Bohemian Melbourne is a fascinating look at the history of Melbourne’s alternative culture and is on at the State Library until 22 February. Don’t miss out!
See an outdoor theatre show
Dine on the waterfront
Tired of waiting for the cool change? Head down to the city waterfront for some wining and dining. Watch the chefs whip you up a dish inspired by the Aussie BBQ at Meat Market South Wharf, or head to Docklands for views and food a’plenty.
Royal Croquet Club
The Royal Croquet Club is quite possibly the coolest festival in town this Summer, and it’s free. Head to Birrarung Marr for live local and international music and delicious food before this fab events wraps up on 1 February.
