What’s On for families (Feb 1-7)

Discover your Melbourne moment this summer. Filled with endless possibilities, there are plenty of options to keep the whole family entertained. Here’s our suggestions for this week.

Where the wild things are

Hitch a ride with City of Melbourne Park Rangers to discover and record the fascinating wildlife we share our wonderful city with. With beetles and bats and possums and water bugs, kids will delight in the encounters they have on this free excursion. There are three workshops, with the first departing from Carlton this Saturday, followed by Docklands on 20 February and Southbank on 27 February. Various locations and dates.

One day, one line of dominoes

Experience the thrill as thousands of breezeblock dominoes fall one by one throughout the city. Down streets and laneways, through buildings and landmarks, Dominoes will be meticulously lined up to form a moving sculpture which will tumble and fall to the delight of onlookers, when the first block is pushed. Arts Centre Melbourne, 6 February.

Shake that booty!

Dance your way into the weekend at First Friday Dance Club with a free Bollywood dance lesson by leading local dancers, Jhoom Bollywood. We encourage you to get into the swing of things by dressing up for the occasion! Open to all ages and experience, you will be ‘saree’ if you miss this one! City Square, 6 February.

Monkey magic

Melbourne Zoo is giving you a rare opportunity to meet their Squirrel Monkeys. Celebrate Chinese New Year 2016 with the Year of the Monkey Experience; in small groups you are invited to enter the monkey enclosure, meet these cute little creatures up close and pose for your very own keepsake photo! Melbourne Zoo, until 29 February.

Carlton Farmers’ Market

Pick up some local seasonal produce this Saturday morning from one of Melbourne’s only accredited farmers markets, the Carlton Farmers’ Market. As it’s located at the local primary school there’s even play equipment to entertain the kids – so you’re invited to grab some fresh food, pull up a picnic rug and make the most of the outing! Carlton Primary School, first Saturday of the month.
