Top bites near the MCG

Heading to the MCG for finals footy? Here’s where to stop off for a pre or post-event feast.

Gazi

It’s hard to go wrong at this upmarket Greek house of deliciousness. The go-to at Gazi is the savoury, juicy and salty souvas, but there is plenty to choose from. The menu features Hellenic street food dishes and large sharing plates if you’ve got time to linger. If you’re in a rush to catch the game, grab your souva to go.

Riverland Bar

Nestled by the Yarra River below Fed Square, Riverland Bar is ideally placed for a footy trip. With a bit of luck, the spring weather will shine and you can have a swift one by the water before the game. Their snag and pint deal make your lunching decisions even easier – a delicious sausage and a pint of Great Northern will only set you back $10 if ordered before the first bounce.

Pilgrim Bar

A little further along from Riverland is Pilgrim Bar. Order a meat and cheese platter to share or choose from a delish selection of baguettes and toasties. Small plates tend towards the veggo, and the waterfront view is fab.

Il Pom Italian

Right in Fed Square, Il Pom Italian serves up all your pizza and pasta favourites, so there’s no need to spend ages working out what to order. Look for the red umbrellas and dine alfresco.

Time Out

Situated under those iconic orange umbrellas and sparkling lights at Fed Square is Time Out. Sip a cocktail or two outside before the game, or feast on modern delights like fried chicken burgers, fresh grilled salmon and warming pumpkin and fetta pizza. Breakfast is served until 3pm, so a pre-game brunch complete with mimosas is definitely not out of the question.

The Duke of Wellington

Take it to the next level and head to the rooftop at The Duke of Wellington. Watch the crowds pass by as you hoe into a tasty parma or fresh poke bowl.

Fonda Mexican

Start the footy fiesta early at Fonda Mexican, just a short 15-minute walk from the Melbourne Cricket Ground. They offer a delicious range of tacos, quesadillas, burritos and salads – all with an Aussie twist. A great option for a quick and juicy bite before the big game.

The Tippler & Co

Only a stone’s throw away from the Melbourne Cricket Ground is The Tippler & Co. This hip bar and eatery has an ever-changing food and drinks selection. We recommend trying the pre-show tapas menu, where you can indulge in five dishes for only $25 before heading to the footy. If you’re after something heavier, try the delicious seared lamb rack or pan-fried gnocchi.

Geppetto Trattoria

Geppetto Trattoria is conveniently located right across the road from the Melbourne Cricket Ground. This traditional Italian restaurant offers plenty of pasta and antipasto dishes to fill up on before or after the game.
