This exhibition represents Australian islands with a unique volcanic story.
The volcanic rock on each island is knotted in silk and designated a vivid fluoro colour to clearly communicate the explosive behaviour. Most of these islands are on the Eastern side of Australia as they are closer to existing and prehistoric magmatic arcs.
Each rug is hand-knotted by artisans in Nepal. The wool and silk are hand died in Nepal to achieve a very specific colour spectrum. This window display will show four of the 15 rugs in the collection (Magnetic Island, Lord Howe Island, King Island and Maria Island).
They rugs are viewable from both the front and back showing the immense time and effort that is put into hand-knotting rugs.
