Day 19: Icing on the cake – sweet treats for Christmas

Melbourne pastry chef Jean Cleary is passionate about Christmas cake. Which is why hers taste so good. We caught up with her in the kitchen at Alice Nivens cafe one evening to hear how she does it. Hint: at least one secret ingredient has something to do with her hometown – Tullamore, in Ireland.

Alice Nivens Christmas cakes cost $40 each or $5 per slice. Yum! You can also pick up Christmas-themed baked goods at a range of other Melbourne cafes. You can find homemade shortbread stars and plum puddings at Local Birds; snowman and reindeer cupcakes at Little Cupcakes; and macaron Christmas trees at Mill and Bakery at Central Pier.
