Sunset Series: Free music, dance and summer fun

Celebrate summer over two weekends as the free Sunset Series returns to Fitzroy Gardens. City of Melbourne’s annual concert series will again transform the beautiful Stage Lawn with music, dance, food and family-friendly entertainment.
As the sun sets, make the most of the warm nights. Bring your friends and family, and relax with a picnic or be tantalised by local food trucks.
Saturdays will feature local bands and singers: 16 January will see singer-songwriter Gena Rose Bruce, the Zebras, Frankie Wants Out and calypso band Mighty Duke and The Lords take to the stage. On 23 January, the dreamy pop of Eliza Hull, country-soul artist Fraser A Gorman, indie-pop band Swim Season and The Cactus Channel will entertain crowds.
Sundays will feature Bollywood and go-go dance workshops that will get everyone up on their feet, thanks to NB Dance and Anna’s Go-Go Academy.

Sunset Series Bands Night - Low Res-50

Relax on the lawn with a picnic or get up and dance

In preparation for Sunset Series 2016, we spoke to one of the acts, The Cactus Channel, to find out what to expect.
Tell us a little bit about yourselves
We’re ten mates who enjoy a dance and a feed together. We met in high school and have been playing music in various bands ever since.
Tell us a little bit about your music
Our music is a cocktail of horns, winds, skins, electrified strings and keys. Sometimes it’s a slow and heavy step, sometimes it’s a sizzling boogie. Either way it’s rooted in funk and soul and hopefully it’s something you can move to as the sun sets.
What can audiences expect at the Sunset Series?
Expect some instrumental funk/soul, some paisley and an invite to the closer regions of the stage should you feel inclined to dance off your food and drink.
What makes you proud to be a Melburnian?
Access to great live music. And really healthy numbers of people who go out and attend shows. It’s a great community that we feel very at home in and haven’t quite experienced anywhere else. Plus there are so many opportunities for budding and establishing artists.

The Cactus Channel will perform at 8pm on Saturday 23 January

Sunset Series runs over two weekends, 16 to 17 and 23 to 24 January, from 5pm to 9pm at Fitzroy Gardens. This is a glass free event.
