Melbourne’s most interesting breakfasts

You wouldn’t eat the same thing for dinner every night, so spice things up with these city breakfasts that stray from the usual fare of granola and smashed avocado. We all know that it’s the most important meal of the day, so it’s time for a change.

Eat breakfast at your desk or scoff toast as you run out the door on some other day. It’s time you cleared your calendar (or booked an early morning meeting) at one of these cafes that keep Melbourne’s breakfast scene fresh.

Magic Mountain Saloon

Magic Mountain Saloon puts a spicy, Asian spin on their breakfast menu

Magic Mountain Saloon

Blending both Thai and Australian flavours, the breakfast menu at Magic Mountain Saloon is extensive. From noodles, to congee (rice porridge), to roti and curries, expect full flavour and meals that will leave you wanting more, even as you struggle to find room to finish what’s on your plate! Our favourite dishes include the Sticky Pork with Shrimp Rice and the Ocean Trout and Ginger Scrambled Eggs.

Open from 7am Monday to Friday and from 8am on weekends.

Tahini

A new addition to the list, expect Lebanese food beyond the standard falafels and hummus at Tahini. And because it’s run by the owner of Code Black, you know you’ll be well looked after in the coffee department. Opt for the most authentic dishes with the Shakshuka (baked eggs) with goats curd, capsicum and chickpeas or the Tablieh Breakfast, essentially a morning mezze plate, with scrambled eggs and grilled halloumi.

Open daily from 7am.

Tahini

You won’t need lunch after you’ve worked on Tahini’s Shakshuka

Hash Specialty Coffee and Roasters

Our favourite dishes at Hash include the Prawn and Corn Fritter, the Cured Kingfish on a Potato Rosti and the Smashed Peas with Hickory Smoked Trout. And it would be rude not to try their signature hot chocolate.

Open from 7am weekdays and 8am on weekends.

Hash

The Brass Coq: Try the breakfast Rare Beef Pho or Waffles, Sesame Banana Butter and Barberry Jam. Open from 7am Monday to Friday.

Sun Moth Canteen: Great for classics done differently like Porridge with Caramelised Figs and Walnuts and Spiced Mushrooms with Poached Egg and Cashew Cream. Open from 8am Monday to Friday.

The Hardware SocieteThen of course there’s the old favourite, with their Breakfast Bavarois or Duck Rillette Baked eggs. Open from 7.30am weekdays and 8.30am on weekends.
