Keep cocktail hour alive in your living room with these tips from the good folk at Melbourne Food and Wine Festival.
Vintage gold from Bar Americano
We all need a vintage ceramic musical decanter, full to the brim with booze, delivered to our door every now and again. One of Melbourne’s most essential (and microscopic) laneway bars, Bar Americano has bottled its negronis, brooklyns and signature americanos. Also in the online store is some highly idiosyncratic merch and trinkets, many from the personal collection of owner Matthew Bax, who has contributed to Melbourne’s art, culture and nightlife for more than two decades. Same-day delivery in the CBD; courier service everywhere else.
Mulled wine from Bar Clara
Bar Clara is one of Chinatown’s newer basement bars. While the physical venue might be in hibernation, the drinks are not. Described as a ‘hug in a mug’ the BC team has just introduced mulled wine delivery. Get perfectly spiced, rich red wine sent to your door, then simply heat and pour. Make sure you have the right cheese to pair it with, too.
Pizza party at Capitano
Your favourite Melbourne Italian-American bar-pizzeria Capitano comes to the party with pizza, pasta, wine and – yes – Italo-American-accented cocktails. There’s olive leaf and olive-oil gin in the olive-oil martini, while rose and rhubarb flavour the rose negroni. No prizes for guessing what’s in the ‘tiramisù milk punch’. And the limoncello? Nick Tesar, bartender extraordinaire from sister venue Bar Liberty made it, ‘so you know it’s good’. Pick up from Carlton every day from 1pm to 8pm. Delivery to select suburbs from Thursday to Saturday, 5pm to 8pm.
Romance was born in Romeo Lane
Light some candles, turn down the lights, and slip into something a little more comfortable: Joe Jones from Romeo Lane is in the house – and he brought drinks. From this award-winning laneway hideaway comes the core martini, old fashioned and manhattan. Or meet the passionfruit daiquiri (fresh!), the peach negroni (peachy!) and the mighty penicillin (topical!). Paralysed by indecision? Consider the ‘seven-day weekend’: 10 of your favourites for $150. Order before 2pm for 4pm pick-up from the bar, or, if you’re in the CBD or surrounds, opt for delivery (minimum four drinks).
Native ingredients at Lui Bar
Lofty fine-dining venue Vue de Monde may be on hiatus, but its chefs and bartenders are keeping busy. Newly launched Vue to You delivers everything from a native seafood curry loaded with marron, blue-mussel stock and barramundi to a classic chicken-and-leek pie. Things are no slouch on the drinks front, either, with choice picks from the Vue cellar at Lui Bar. In the mood for something stronger? Choose from the negroni, the martini and the old fashioned, or order all three for $72. Pick-up from Vue de Monde. Delivery to a 10km radius of the CBD. Booze and non-perishables posted Australia-wide.
Liquid sunshine from Whisky + Alement
Russell Street favourite Whisky + Alement is devoted to the idea that greater knowledge brings greater pleasure, especially where single-malt whiskies are concerned. The team has put together a variety of whisky flights: small tastes of different drams all linked by different themes, like the ‘highlander collection’, the ‘collector’s drams’ and the wishful drinking of the ‘antipasto picnic’. Drop-off delivery to Melbourne CBD and surrounds. Postal delivery throughout Victoria.
Locally sourced by Byrdi
Shake and stir up your evenings with radical drinks from new bar Byrdi, thanks to distribution through neighbourhood bottle shop Blackhearts & Sparrows, which has a Kensington store among others. Try the likes of ‘the lamington’ (Australian sugarcane spirit, cocoa butter, coconut oil and raspberry vermouth) and the ‘bee pollen refashioned’ (cane spirit infused with wild bee pollen, sugar and Byrdi bitters #1).
Please drink responsibly. Due to current circumstances, businesses may close or run out of stock at short notice. Please check with individual stores for details.
