Looking for that perfect office party idea in the lead-up to Christmas? Or just fancy messing around on the water with a special someone? Melbourne has a flotilla of water taxis, charter vessels and cruise ships to choose from. Here’s a brief round-up.
One of the most striking is the Enterprize, a 27-metre, timber, two-masted topsail schooner and exact replica of John Pascoe Fawkner’s ship that sailed into what we now call the City of Melbourne in 1835. One-hour evening cruises from Docklands cost $55 per adult and are scheduled for 20 and 21 December. Find out more and book your Enterprize Tall Ship Cruise.
For short trips on the Yarra and Maribyrnong rivers try Melbourne Water Taxis. Prices start at $10 per person for short trips, but it’s possible to hire the three boats (capacities vary from 12 to 40 people) for tailored cruises. The business has been around for nearly 20 years and yes, you can wear high heels on board and no, there’s no meter like in a regular taxi. You can make a booking on 0416 068 655.
If you’re slightly more adventurous, why not hire your own boat to tour Melbourne’s waterways or perhaps try a spot of recreational fishing? Boat 4 Hire has a range of small craft perfect for these kinds of activities, but remember, to drive a boat with an engine of more than 10 horsepower you’ll need a recreational boat license.
At the luxury end of the spectrum you’ll find Quest III, a 25-metre yacht with three levels and six bathrooms. Perfect for corporate Christmas functions of up to 45 people, a minimum hire for 15 costs $5400, including a seafood grazing menu, Chandon non-vintage sparkling, beer, wine and a three-hour cruise. You’ll find her at Central Pier, Docklands.
Of course, there are loads more boats and cruise operators to choose from. Happy Christmas boating!
