Shopping. Some of us excel in that department – others could do with a tote bag or two of help. In the busy lead-up to Christmas, the good news is that some of Melbourne’s funkiest boutique retailers are holding special shopping nights where you can pick up a bargain after normal business hours (handy), have some fun, and with any luck, discover some stores you didn’t know about along the way.
First cab off the rank is vintage haberdashery L’uccello. Tucked away on level 2 of the Nicholas Building, owner Kim Hurley (pictured above) says her colourful store (full of gorgeous and quirky handmade decorations) will spread Christmas cheer with sweet treats, lucky dips, a raffle, and free festive wrapping. Dates are Thursday 28 and Friday 29 November from 10am to 8pm, and Saturday 30 November from 10am to 5.30pm.
Just around the corner, more than 40 independent designers and retailers have banded together for the Flinders Lane Shopping Night. Think silk frocks, skateboards, high-end skincare, and independent and local music. This is the third time the store owners have joined forces – you can expect pop-up shops, a gift wrapping station, giveaways and drinks on Flinders Lane and surrounding alleys and laneways. But remember, it’s one night only – Thursday 28 November, from 5 to 9pm.
For lovers of unique male jewellery, there’s Lord Coconut’s VIP Xmas Shopping Night, on Tuesday 10 December, from 5 to 8pm. You can try your luck in a $150 cufflink lucky dip for Australian-made sterling silver cufflinks valued between $190 and $270.
Then, in Melbourne’s Russell Place, six retailers are planning a late night shopping event, offering complimentary drinks and treats. They include Neapoli Wine Bar, Pieces of Eight Gallery, Saint Louie Hair, 124 Shoes, Milano and Co, and Honour Among Thieves. Meet the Little Heroes of Russell Place is on Thursday 12 December, from 6 to 8pm.
If you’re still not shopped-out, Spencer Outlet Centre is holding a VIP shopping event with festive entertainment and activities on Thursday 5 December, from 10am to 8pm. Shoptastic!
