The echo of people training in the new gym at Carlton Baths joins the sound of splashing in the outdoor pool, as the facility reopens after a $15 million redevelopment.
Former ballet dancer Joanne Narayan (left) is familiar with the roundabout trip to peak physical performance. She’s been a gym instructor and personal trainer with Carlton Baths for five years and hopes that a new purpose built health club at the refurbished Carlton Baths will inspire more people to get fit.
‘Maybe people come in with a goal of weight loss, but often they learn to enjoy exercise and feel good about themselves and experience benefits other than aesthetic ones,’ says Joanne.
The new Carlton Baths features a state-of-the-art gym with new equipment, a larger group fitness room and cycle studio, a refurbished stadium, community spaces including meeting rooms and a kitchenette, centralised reception, Green Light Eat Right healthy eating kiosk and improved change rooms.
The new-look Carlton Baths is also more sustainable, with better insulation, double glazing, rainwater collection, solar hot water, low energy fittings, passive ventilation, and energy efficient pool plant and systems.
Parents and members can drop their children into registered occasional child care and use the health club facilities, and new web-based technology Mobile Fit is in use.
Family services including maternal and child health, play groups, baby capsule hire and more return to the centre from 13 February.
Carlton Baths is open from 6am to 10pm weekdays and 8am to 8pm weekends.
